This was a very easy project inspired by an article on Hometalk. Their site provides excellent step-by-step instructions for creating this rustic wall decor, which I followed with little variation. I did experiment with the wood finishes and bottle types, and below are my creations which became Christmas presents for my siblings.
For the stain, I used Minwax Classic Gray 271, and Minwax Provincial 211.
For the paint, I used 1 coat of Snow Fall (Behr latex paint) followed by 1 coat of the Classic Grey stain.
Some things I learned during the process:
- A magic eraser worked best for removing the final sticky label residue from the wine bottles.
- Using Minwax Wood Conditioner gave the stain a more even finish, but still allowed the wood to look rustic.
- I've never cut metal before, had no idea what 'aviation snips' were nor the difference between straight, left, and right cuts, and if it mattered which type I used. I ended up buying 1 of each type in a 3-piece set by HDX from Home Depot, and the straight cut version was perfect (as well as a bargain @ less than $10 for all 3 pair).
